Can Flex compete with Java Applet?

We can use Java Swing in Applet, which makes it RIA client
running in a browser. Can anyone list the advantages of Flex over
Java?|||
So if servlets were still alive, why would Sun be taking a
new route with java Fx?|||
Servlets will be alive for thin web client. But html has
limitations.

More and more people find that rich web client are fast and
sleek. JavaFx using Swing in JRT and Flex are the options now.
