I have attached an image and I need to know how to create this sort of border around a text….
If anyone could give an “idiots” guide that would be great!!
I really have tried but don’t seem to be getting anywhere and i’m sure there’s an easy shortcut somewhere.

also… this is not a stroke… the stroke seems to fill in on other letters when you do it

The function is called Offset Path.
You could work with mutliple fills on your type and then use it all as effects, but maybe you’d like it somewhat simpler. Then convert your type to paths and use Object > Path > Offset path

that’s brilliant… thank you so much. i really appreciate your help!

tip: use it from your appearence pallet effect if you want to keep it live.

You can have a stroke that fills in the open spaces within (“the counters”) by adding a pathfinder effect to the mix – I wrote up a tutorial here: http://www.illustratorhints.com/2010/05/fill-in-the-counters-on-live-t ext/
Actually, that shows your whole question I think – I used offset fills instead of strokes, but the idea is the same.

That tutorial is stolen goods
